Student Conference Photo Highlights

Dr. Steve Goodnick, Associate Vice President of Research at Arizona State University, Epsilon Beta Faculty Advisor and HKN Board Member, opened the conference with a keynote about HKN and leadership.
Attendees divided into groups of four for a team project. Each group was given a bag of assorted odds and ends to make a ping-pong ball launcher. They could trade with other groups or bid on extra supplies.
Each group's ping-pong ball launcher had to send the ball at least one foot; teams received extra points for creativity. Students were able to meet HKN members from other schools and learn how to work together as a group - a valuable skill for these future leaders.
Everyone gathered for the ping-pong ball launching contest. Dr. Tom Talavage, Beta Faculty Advisor, recorded the distances.
After a fascinating luncheon keynote, Mike Birck, Chairman of Tellabs, accompanied the group on a tour of the state-of-the-art Birck Nanotechnology Center at Purdue University. Students were impressed at the technological advances that are being discovered in that facility each day.
Attendees work together on an assignment during the Career Development Workshop.
Beta Chapter (Purdue University) President Eddie Pettis moderated a Chapter Development Panel, where presidents from 5 Outstanding Chapter Award winning chapters discussed chapter management strategies. This was one of the highlights of the conference for all attendees, and after a lively discussion, everyone said they came away with new ideas for their own chapters. Notes are available at www.hkn.org.
Leah Jamieson, Dean of Engineering at Purdue University and President-elect of the IEEE, provided thoughtful insights about the future possibilities of engineering careers and the many opportunities available to HKN members at the dinner keynote address.
The champions of the team projects won t-shirts and were acknowledged at the dinner.
Thank you to our organizers, Beta Chapter, Purdue University, for their time and effort, and for being wonderful hosts.

Dr. Thomas Talavage, Faculty Advisor for Beta Chapter, Purdue University, received the C. Holmes MacDonald Outstanding Teaching Award. He is seen here with Steve Watkins (Faculty Advisor for Gamma Theta, University of Missouri Rolla and HKN Board Member), Mark Smith (ECE Department Head at Purdue University), Steve Goodnick (Associate Vice President for Research at Arizona State University, Epsilon Beta Faculty Advisor, and HKN Board Member), and Roger Plummer (Executive Director of HKN.)
Attendees enjoyed the networking opportunities and getting to know other HKN members from the Midwest and beyond.
