CHICAGO - July 1, 2006 -- Eta Kappa Nu, the national honor society for electrical and computer engineers, today announced that J. David Irwin will assume the position of president and Bruce Eisenstein will serve as vice president. Their term of office will be July 1, 2006 to June 20, 2007.
HKN Executive Director Roger Plummer commented, "HKN looks forward to continued success and progress under the direction of these two leaders." Plummer continued, "We are especially thankful to Mr. Karl Martersteck, current HKN president, for his leadership during the management transition of HKN to the International Engineering Consortium (IEC) these past two years."
Mr. Martersteck, a retired ArrayComm president and chief executive officer, led many industry developments throughout his career both as former AT&T Bell Labs vice president of network development and former vice president of AT&T architecture. He will assume the position of past president on the HKN Executive Committee.
Dr. J. David Irwin, Earle C. Williams Eminent Scholar and Head of Electrical and Computer Engineering at Auburn University, has been named HKN president. Dr. Irwin is also past president of both the IEEE Industrial Electronics Society and the IEEE Education Society. He has served the Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers (IEEE) Computer Society as a member of the Education Committee.
Former NASA/ASEE Fellow at Stanford University and the Ames Research Center, Dr. Bruce Eisenstein takes on the role of vice president. Dr. Eisenstein is a 1976 recipient of HKN's C. Holmes MacDonald Outstanding Teaching Award. He is also a Fellow of the IEEE.
Eta Kappa Nu welcomes two new members to the Board. Worcester Polytechnic Institute's Dr. John Orr, dean of Undergraduate Studies and professor of electrical and computer engineering, will serve as the new director-at-large. Dr. Orr is an IEEE Fellow and former president of Electrical and Computer Engineering Department Heads Association (ECEDHA).
Also new to the board is Kansas State professor of electrical and computer engineering, Dr. David L. Soldan, who will serve as HKN's director of the West Central Region. An IEEE Fellow, Soldan also serves as an IEEE Commissioner on the ABET Engineering Accreditation Commission. Soldan is also a former president of ECEDHA.
In a realignment of board responsibilities, Teresa Olson, HKN's Outstanding Young Engineer of the Year in 2001, will serve as director of the East Central Region.
After many years of dedicated and illustrious service, Eric Herz, former HKN president, and Lyle Feisel, a member of the Board of Governors, will leave the board. Both helped to advance the national honor society consisting of approximately 200 chapters and more than 200,000 members.
