Karl E. Martersteck
Consultant, Telecommunications
Past President, Eta Kappa Nu

Mr. Martersteck joined Bell Laboratories in 1959 as a member of technical staff after serving in the U.S. Navy as a destroyer chief engineering officer. At Bell Labs, he worked on developing silicon devices and integrated circuits. From 1964 through 1972, at Bellcomm, Inc. (an AT&T subsidiary), in Washington, D.C., he led mission planning and systems analysis activities for the Apollo lunar landing and Skylab projects. Upon returning to Bell Laboratories in 1973, he was responsible for systems engineering, design and development of telecommunications operations software systems. He then directed the development of various switching systems, principally the 4ESS toll switch, which controls virtually all of the switched traffic in the AT&T network. In 1982 he assumed overall responsibility for the design and development of the versatile and ultra-reliable 5ESS digital switch, the largest project ever undertaken by Bell Laboratories. The 5ESS continues to be a flagship product of Lucent Technologies, Inc., and is widely deployed in the U.S. and throughout the world.

In 1989, Mr. Martersteck was appointed AT&T Bell Labs Vice President, Network Development, with responsibility for architecture and engineering, as well as operations software development, to support the AT&T global network. He subsequently became Vice President, AT&T Architecture and led the Bell Labs Architecture Area team in working with the AT&T business unit planners to enable AT&T's strategic intent, in particular by identifying and defining opportunities to more rapidly utilize emerging technologies. In this role, he also provided leadership in generating standards strategies reflecting AT&T business needs and priorities.

Mr. Martersteck retired as President and Chief Executive Officer of ArrayComm, Inc., of San Jose, CA, on January 1, 1999. He had joined ArrayComm in July, 1995. ArrayComm develops and applies patented spatial-processing technology to improve wireless communications systems performance by significantly reducing service delivery costs, conserving radio spectrum and improving service quality. He is currently a telecommunications consultant.

Mr. Martersteck received a Bachelor of Science degree in Physics from the University of Notre Dame, and a Master of Electrical Engineering degree from New York University.

He is a member of the U. S. National Academy of Engineering, a Fellow of the IEEE, a member of Eta Kappa Nu and a senior member of the Board of Directors and a Fellow of the International Engineering Consortium. Prior to retirement, he served as a member of the Board of Overseers of the Armour College of Engineering of the Illinois Institute of Technology, the Board of Trustees of North Central College, Naperville, IL, and the Board of Directors of the American National Standards Institute.

Mr. Martersteck was the first recipient of the IEEE Medal for Engineering Excellence.
